Fortunately, here in Ohio, there are many reputable health insurance companies. Health insurance of Ohio is offered by these companies through reputable brokers. Whether you live in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, or one of the smaller communities in the state, coverage will always be available. Some of the major health insurance companies that offer coverage in Ohio include UnitedHealthOne, Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna, Medical Mutual, Celtic, Assurant and Humana. All of these companies offer a wide variety of options, including comprehensive plans, catastrophic plans and Health Savings Accounts.

But Ohio health insurance rates can vary from one area to another. For example, in most zip codes, Northern Ohio residents will pay a higher premium than their neighbors to the South. Coverages will not vary, but some carriers will have larger Networks in certain areas of the state. Also, since the cost of a typical office visit or hospital stay is more expensive in the Northern portion of the state, rates, naturally will be higher. However, student health insurance rates in Ohio always seem to be fairly low.

If you are currently insured in another state and are moving to Ohio, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how low health insurance of Ohio is. Most other states charge a significantly higher premium and often don't offer as many choices as we have here.

As your personal broker and advisor, I will research and recommend the best health insurance plans for your specific budget and situation. And each year, your existing policy will be reviewed, to ensure the coverages still match your needs, and to verify that your current rate is still competitive compared to other Ohio health insurance rates. With more than 30 years in the business, if I don't know the answer to your question, I will locate a source that can provide the answer.

Which Ohio health insurance company should you choose? Anthem, UnitedHealthCare, Aetna, Medical Mutual, Humana, Celtic, Assurant...There are so many good  insurance companies that seem to offer similar plans. How do you determine which plan is best for you? And are you paying for coverages you won't need? Or possibly buying a policy that excludes an important coverage you should have?

Unless you have at least 20 years of experience in the business...it may be difficult to make an informed decision. But that's where I can help. With more than 30 years of experience...all here in Ohio...I'll help you determine which company and what plan meet your needs the best. Many health insurance websites online are not based in Ohio, and therefore may not be familiar with recent rate or coverage changes. Also, those websites tend to sell your information to other brokers across the US, which we will never do. Your personal information is always protected on this website.

My specialty is finding the Ohio health insurance coverage plans that offer maximum coverage at the most affordable rate. Only "A" rated companies are considered and rate stability and prompt claims-paying ability are very important. We never use any "discount plans," and the rates you see on this website are the lowest published rates from each carrier. We'll help you with the application process from start to finish, or you can handle it yourself. Regardless, we're always available.

For example, UnitedHealthOne's rate is slightly lower in the 453 zip codes, compared to the 454 zip codes. And Anthem is very competitive in the 452 and 432 zip codes. Lately, Medical Mutual has been able to offer some of the best available rates in the Cincinnati area. Obviously, there are may more variables to consider, and my job is to thoroughly research your options and give you an unbiased recommendation.

The application process is quick, and quite painless! And you're always represented by an Ohio broker...not an out-of-state call-center that may recommend the wrong plan. Your personal information is never shared with any other person or company.

Ohio family health insurance coverage provides comprehensive office visit, prescription and catastrophic benefits in one policy. Depending on the deductible, medical insurance rates for Ohio families may be much less expensive than you realize. The typical plan also covers preventive expenses at no cost (mandated by reacent changes to nationalhealth care).

I’ll examine rates for a “typical” family in different parts of Ohio and use the Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus and Cleveland areas. Our sample healthy Ohio family is a husband and wife (both age 35) with two children, ages 8 and 6. Ohio family health insurance plans can vary, so I'm selecting high-quality plans from Ohio's top four carriers, which are Anthem Blue Cross, UnitedHealthcare, Medical Mutual and Aetna.

Ohio family plans will typically cost less than comprable policies from other states. Generally, family plan rates are higher than a catastrophic (only) plan. Most group health plans provided by employers arel also comprehensive contracts, although other types of benefits may be offered.

I’m comparing three of the most comprehensive Ohio health insurance family plans…Anthem Premier Plus, UnitedHealthCare Copay Select, Medical Mutual SuperMed One Elite and Aetna PPO 2500.  All four plans have copays on most office visit and prescriptions, and a $2500 deductible on major claims. Rates are monthly:

Cincinnati Health Insurance Rates

:

  • Anthem- $542
  • UnitedHealthCare- $490
  • Aetna- $609
  • Medical Mutual- $531

Dayton Health Insurance Rates

:

  • Anthem- $511
  • UnitedHealthCare- $435
  • Aetna- $609
  • Medical Mutual- $462

Columbus Health Insurance Rates

:

  • Anthem- $542
  • UnitedHealthCare-  $435
  • Aetna- $591
  • Medical Mutual- $490

Cleveland Health Insurance Rates

:

  • Anthem- $544
  • UnitedHealthCare- $531
  • Aetna- $656
  • Medical Mutual- $532

It appears that the Dayton and Columbus areas offer some of the lowest health insurance rates in Ohio! And don't forget that higher deductibles will reduce the rates.

2009 UPDATE: The original article was written more than a year ago and rates from all companies have increased. Anthem's "Plan 2" has been replaced by the "Premier" plan and some coverages have changed. My suggestion is to click on the "Get Instant Quote" button at the top of the page, and you will view current rates.

2010 UPDATE: Well...rates have increased again, but not substantially. New national health care reform has added preventive benefits to most plans with a provision that you do not have to meet a deductible. Also...Medical Mutual now offers extremely competitive rates in the Cincinnati area, and many other parts of the state.

2012 UPDATE: I added Medical Mutual and updated all of the rates.

Columbus health insurance rates in Ohio are very affordable, and represent some of the lowest available rates in the US. Most of the Columbus area has enjoyed low health insurance rates since 2003. Ohio individual and family plans continue to remain among the "best buys" in the Midwest. UnitedHealthOne, Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna, Medical Mutual, Celtic and Humana are just a few of the major companies that we research for you. We never consider "discount plans," and guarantee that your rates are the lowest allowable by each carrier.

Short-term health insurance rates in Columbus are also some of the most affordable options in Ohio. If you need medical coverage for less than 12 months, ask us about a short-term temporary plan. Rates are approximately 25%-60% lower than most comprehensive plans and this type of policy works well if you are between jobs, laid off, a graduating student or waiting for benefits to begin from a new employer. Typically, UnitedHealthOne and Humana have the most competitive short-term rates in the Columbus area. We'll be happy to review your specific needs and determine if short-term coverage is your best option.

If you’re a resident of Franklin County, or some of the surrounding Ohio counties, such as Delaware, Union, Madison and Licking, rates are among the lowest in the state. High-deductible and catastrophic plans will be the least expensive, often less than $100 per month for an individual, and less than $250 per month for a family. Columbus Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are also still one of the most popular options for the self employed, and individuals and families that don't submit many claims. HSA contributions can be used to pay qualified medical, dental and vision expenses on a tax-favored basis.

Some of the reasons for  low rates in Columbus include lower hospital room and expense charges, lower doctor’s office and Urgent Care visit charges, and perhaps a higher use of preventative coverage from individual policyholders. Columbus area health insurance rates for the self-employed are also lower than many other areas of the state. HSAs and high-deductible plans are often popular choices for the self-employed. Because the insurers are able to negotiate larger discounts, you'll often pay less on medical expenses that are subject to a deductible.

UnitedHealthOne, Medical Mutual and Anthem offer the most competitive Ohio health insurance rates in the Columbus area. However, we are constantly monitoring current rate trends in an effort to insure you are receiving the most coverage for your dollar. For catastrophic and preventative coverage (only), Medical Mutual offers very attractive rates and many of the plans are HSA-eligible. UnitedHealthOne is one of the few Ohio companies that feature a single family deductible for their HSA plans.

Health insurance rates in Central Ohio are expected to remain very attractive for the foreseeable future. To instantly compare or apply for quality Columbus health insurance  coverage, please click on the "Get Instant Quote" button at the top of the page.
